From Johnathan:
The club was in the small FRC room.
We started building Jim2 to win the SAE WMD competition. We were already going to enter again, but we were absolutely determied to win after our trip to Illinois with the original Jim in 1997-98- because there was some professor who had organized it that year, who told us that our double-frame idea was probably just too complicated, and we should really make something simpler if we wanted it to work. You know, dumb it down to Legos or something, otherwise, us lowly undergrads would never succeed. It really pissed us off. So we decided we were going to go back and win.
Jim2 didn't make it to the competition this year, we just couldn't quite get it together in time. The lift mechanisms didn't work. In retrospect, it was obvious; the gear reduction was far from sufficient. But, this gave us another year to really refine everything and get it tested thoroughly before competition.
