There are a lack of 40pin FFC connectors, the common sizes seem to be <= 30 pins. We can do 2 20-pin connectors to meet our goals.

This is a 4", 20pin connector:

This is a 20pin SMT header:

The later seems to be a "lower" connector while the cable is an "upper" cable. The cable (upper and lower) seem to be symmetrical and I don't really see why we can't just flip the cable over and make it a "lower" cable.

With 2 side by side the resulting width is about the same as a 12pin 0.1" header that we are using now (about 1.2") which saves us considerable room.

The contacts are rated to 0.5A and 50V, much more than we would need (though we may need to route power/gnd separately)

This looks like a good, fairly low cost solution. Routing power/gnd separately is no problem.
